Here are five elements you can use to strengthen your resilience.
Physical:
First and foremost, we are biological beings. Our health and hormones have a huge impact on our wellbeing. The quickest way to improve in this area is to hit the trifactor of sleep, movement and nutrition. Getting enough quality sleep, being physically active and eating well will give you a strong foundation.
Mental:
Your ability to direct and maintain your mental focus is a key factor to improve resilience and perform better in any area of life. A good way to train this is by practicing any type of mindfulness meditation. You can use the increased mental strength from this training to direct your thoughts towards positive elements, even in the face of hardship. This will eventually lead to more mental flexibility, because you will know that you can find a solution for any problem.
Emotional:
Emotions do not just happen to us. We have a lot of influence on the way we feel, even though the first wave of emotion can hit us by surprise. To establish a strong foundation, you can start with self-compassion. This includes positive inner dialogue, strengthening the nurturing sides within you and activating compassionate members of your inner team. You can then move on to active stress management by learning breathing techniques and applying mindfulness to calm yourself down and get a more distant perspective. To go even further you can then constantly work on improving your emotional fitness.
Social:
Go out and talk to people – you might be surprised how nice they usually turn out to be. Nurture social activities you enjoy. If you want to overcome a specific issue you will most likely find people with similar experiences who will benefit from your support as you will from theirs.
If you want to strengthen your social skills, there are lots and lots of possibilities to improve your communication, compassion, influence and overall knowledge of human nature.
Spiritual:
A great way to improve your spiritual foundation is to get clarity on what is most valuable to you in a non-economic sense. You can find this in friendship, nature, wisdom, creativity, even humor. Building on this foundation, you can add more purpose and meaning to your life, even by defining it instead of waiting for it to reveal itself.
Lastly you might enjoy spiritual practices like prayer, meditation alone or in an experience with others.
To start strengthening your resilience, you do not need to cover all the bases. Start with the low hanging fruit! There are certainly some elements that will be easy for you to improve, and with time, you might include more and more into your life.
