The Power of Habit in Personal Development
One of the most powerful tools in personal development is the ability to influence habits. This involves eliminating “bad” habits, creating “good” ones, and maintaining them.
The Habit Loop Explained
The author, Charles Duhigg, condenses a vast amount of psychological knowledge into a simple model—the habit loop.
Pleasure Reinforces Repetition
The concept is straightforward: intuitively, we gravitate toward actions that are easy and lead to pleasure. When we perform a certain behavior that results in pleasure, our brain records this behavior along with the triggering cue, prompting us to repeat it when a similar opportunity arises.
For example, the cue could be a chocolate cookie, the behavior might be eating it, and the result is a dopamine release and a warm, cozy sugar rush.
Alternatively, the cue could be an alarm clock, the behavior might be going for a morning run, and the result is a powerful endorphin rush and the pride of starting your day strong.
Short-Term Pleasure vs. Long-Term Value
As you can see, for your intuitive habits, it does not matter if the pleasure you feel from a habit is short-lived or even harmful in the long run. Most things that bring immediate pleasure are not very healthy or valuable, whereas most valuable and healthy habits are tough to start because they are uncomfortable at first, and the rewards will come much later.
Use Logic to Shape Lasting Habits
This means that relying solely on your intuitive, emotional mind is not enough to develop healthy habits. You need your cognitive, rational mind to define the cue, the behavior, and focus on the reward. The better you are at creating these habit loops, the easier it will be to follow through, even without relying on willpower.
Start Small: The Tiny Habits Approach
Stanford professor BJ Fogg is a great source of insight on this topic as well. He has created the concept of “Tiny Habits,” showing that improving your habits with baby steps will bring strong results over time and make you much more likely to follow through.
